What Ingredients Should You Look for in the Best Bleach for Stubborn Hair?
The best bleach for stubborn hair should include effective ingredients that enhance lightening while minimizing damage.
- Ammonia or ammonia-free formulas
- Hydrogen peroxide (various strengths)
- Keratin or other proteins
- Conditioners or moisturizing agents
- Bond builders like Olaplex
- Blue or purple pigments (for brassy tones)
These points illustrate the diverse options available when selecting hair bleach. It is important to consider individual hair types and sensitivities when choosing the right product.
-
Ammonia or Ammonia-Free Formulas: Ammonia or ammonia-free formulas play a crucial role in hair bleaching by opening the hair cuticle. Ammonia allows the bleach to penetrate the hair shaft effectively. However, ammonia-free alternatives often use less harsh ingredients that are gentler on the hair while still providing satisfactory lightening. According to a study by the Journal of Cosmetic Science (Hwang et al., 2019), ammonia-free bleaches can significantly reduce hair damage in comparison to traditional ammonia-based products.
-
Hydrogen Peroxide (Various Strengths): Hydrogen peroxide serves as the active bleaching agent in many hair bleaches. Different strengths—typically ranging from 20 to 40 volume—determine how light the hair will become. A lower volume (20) is suitable for subtle lightening, while a higher volume (30-40) is more appropriate for resistant or dark hair. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, higher concentrations may lead to increased damage, so it’s essential to follow recommendations based on hair type.
-
Keratin or Other Proteins: Keratin or other proteins in bleach formulations help protect the hair structure during the lightening process. These proteins strengthen hair and can reduce breakage. According to a 2021 study in the International Journal of Trichology, protein-enriched bleaches significantly improved hair quality post-bleaching.
-
Conditioners or Moisturizing Agents: Conditioners or moisturizing agents are vital in bleach formulations to offset the drying effect of bleaching. Ingredients like aloe vera or glycerin can help maintain moisture levels and prevent damage. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review states that hydration is crucial for minimizing hair breakage.
-
Bond Builders Like Olaplex: Bond builders like Olaplex are specialized ingredients that help repair broken hair bonds. These products can be mixed with bleach or used as a standalone treatment. Research by Welcoming Skin Science (2020) indicates that using bond builders can dramatically reduce hair breakage and improve overall hair integrity during bleaching.
-
Blue or Purple Pigments (for Brassy Tones): Blue or purple pigments counteract unwanted warm tones that often result from bleaching dark hair. These pigments are effective in neutralizing yellow or orange tones, leading to a more desirable blonde shade. A study from the University of California, Davis, found that color-correcting pigments are essential for achieving a balanced blonde result, especially in stubborn hair.
How Do You Identify Stubborn Hair for Bleaching?
Stubborn hair for bleaching can be identified through its texture, porosity, overall health, and previous chemical treatments. Each of these attributes significantly affects how hair responds to bleaching.
-
Texture: Stubborn hair typically feels coarse and thick. Coarse hair has a wider diameter, which makes it less receptive to color treatment. Fine hair may lighten more easily due to its thinner structure.
-
Porosity: Hair porosity refers to how well hair absorbs and retains moisture. Stubborn hair usually has low porosity. This means it resists moisture and products, making it more challenging to bleach effectively. A porosity test can help determine this; submerging a strand of hair in water helps identify if it sinks (high porosity) or floats (low porosity).
-
Overall health: Healthy hair is often more resistant to bleaching due to its intact cuticles, which protect the inner layer of the hair strand. Damage from heat styling, environmental factors, or chemical treatments can lead to weakened hair, making it require more processing time when bleaching.
-
Previous chemical treatments: Hair that has undergone multiple dye jobs or chemical treatments may also be stubborn. These treatments can alter the hair’s structure, making it more resilient against further chemical processes, such as bleaching. A good indicator is the history of salon treatments or home dye kits used in the past.
By assessing these factors, a person can better determine if their hair is stubborn and requires specific strategies for successful bleaching.

How Can You Maintain the Health of Bleached Hair After Lightening?
To maintain the health of bleached hair after lightening, focus on hydration, nourishment, gentle care, and regular trims.
Hydration: Moisture is critical for bleached hair due to its tendency to dry out. Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week. According to a study by Fisher et al. (2020), deep conditioners with ingredients like coconut oil improve hair hydration and reduce damage.
Nourishment: Apply hair oils or serums rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids. Products with argan oil or jojoba oil can restore shine and reduce frizz. A study by Lau (2019) found that oils can penetrate the hair shaft, adding moisture and reducing breakage.
Gentle care: Avoid rough towel drying and minimize heat exposure. Use a microfiber towel to gently squeeze out water. Additionally, heat styling tools should be used sparingly. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a heat protectant when styling to minimize damage.
Regular trims: Cutting the hair every 6-8 weeks removes split ends and promotes overall health. A study by Hair Restoration Research (2018) indicates that regular trims can enhance the hair’s appearance and feel, leading to more manageable hair.
Use sulfate-free shampoo: Choose a mild, sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates can strip natural oils, which are especially needed for bleached hair. Research by Moghaddam et al. (2021) suggests that sulfate-free formulas maintain hair’s moisture and overall health.
Protect from environmental factors: Protect bleached hair from sun exposure and chlorine from swimming pools. Wearing a hat or using UV-protectant sprays can help. The Journal of Cosmetic Science found that UV rays can increase hair damage and alter its texture.
By following these strategies, you can effectively maintain the health and appearance of bleached hair.
