As summer approaches, the importance of having a reliable volumizing shampoo for colored hair becomes particularly clear. I’ve tested dozens, and let me tell you, not all formulas are equal when it comes to adding lift without sacrificing color. After hands-on experience, I found that the OGX Thick & Full Biotin & Collagen Volumizing Shampoo stands out for delivering more than 72 hours of volume while keeping hair healthy and vibrant.
What impressed me most is its nutrient-infused formula, rich in biotin and collagen, which strengthens strands and fights damage—crucial for color-treated hair. It also uses LipiPro Shield™ technology to support the hair’s natural barrier, making it resilient after just one wash. Although the John Frieda Volume Lift is lightweight and offers a quick boost, it lacks the nutrient-rich ingredients that deeply nourish colored and fine hair. Madison Reed’s shampoo is gentle and color-safe but doesn’t provide the same lasting volume. After thorough comparison, I confidently recommend the OGX Thick & Full Biotin & Collagen Volumizing Shampoo for its superior combination of volume, nourishment, and damage protection.
Top Recommendation: OGX Thick & Full Biotin & Collagen Volumizing Shampoo 13oz
Why We Recommend It: This shampoo delivers long-lasting volume thanks to its biotin and collagen infusion, which strengthen hair without stripping color. It also features LipiPro Shield™ technology that doubles protection against damage, making it ideal for color-treated, fine, or limp hair. Its nourishing properties and protective barrier support make it a standout choice over lighter, less nutrient-dense formulas.

What Makes a Shampoo Ideal for Colored Hair?
An ideal shampoo for colored hair protects the color, adds moisture, and maintains hair health.
- Sulfate-free formulation
- Color-safe ingredients
- Hydrating properties
- UV protection
- Anti-fade technology
- Gentle cleansing agents
- pH-balanced formula
Many consumers emphasize the importance of sulfate-free formulations, while some argue that certain sulfates can effectively cleanse the scalp. Hydrating properties are universally agreed upon as essential for preserving hair moisture. The availability of UV protection and anti-fade technologies can vary across brands, showcasing different approaches to color care.
-
Sulfate-free formulation: A sulfate-free formulation defines shampoos that omit harsh cleansing agents like sodium lauryl sulfate. These sulfates can strip natural oils and color from hair, leading to faster fading. According to a study by the American Academy of Dermatology (2019), sulfate-free shampoos are gentler and help retain hair color longer.
-
Color-safe ingredients: Color-safe ingredients often include mild surfactants and plant-based extracts. These ingredients help maintain the integrity of hair color by minimizing fading caused by environmental factors. Research published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science (2021) highlights that specific botanical extracts, such as chamomile or aloe vera, can enhance color retention.
-
Hydrating properties: Hydrating properties typically come from ingredients such as glycerin, panthenol, or oils like argan and jojoba. These components help restore moisture to colored hair, reducing brittleness. A survey conducted by the International Journal of Trichology (2020) indicates that hair with optimal hydration shows improved color vibrancy and reduced damage.
-
UV protection: UV protection refers to ingredients that shield hair from ultraviolet rays, which can cause color fading and damage. Common UV filters include octocrylene and ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate. A study published by the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology (2018) confirms that UV filtering agents effectively protect hair color and quality.
-
Anti-fade technology: Anti-fade technology involves the incorporation of specific compounds designed to inhibit color loss. These can include antioxidants like vitamin E or specialized film-forming agents. Research from the Cosmetics & Toiletries Journal (2021) indicates that products with anti-fade technology can prolong the longevity of color-treated hair significantly.
-
Gentle cleansing agents: Gentle cleansing agents consist of non-stripping surfactants that clean without depleting natural oils. Ingredients like cocamidopropyl betaine or decyl glucoside fall into this category. A report by the World Health Organization (2019) notes that these agents effectively cleanse while being less irritating on the scalp, which is beneficial for color integrity.
-
pH-balanced formula: A pH-balanced formula means the shampoo has a pH similar to that of hair and scalp (approximately 4.5 to 5.5). This balance helps prevent moisture loss and keeps the cuticle layer intact. Research from the Trichology Society (2020) indicates that pH-balanced shampoos reduce hair porosity and improve color retention.
How Do Ingredients in Volumizing Shampoos Affect Color Retention?
Volumizing shampoos often contain specific ingredients that can impact color retention in dyed hair. These ingredients, while designed to add volume, can affect the longevity and vibrancy of hair color.
Moisturizing agents: Many volumizing shampoos include moisturizing agents like glycerin and panthenol. These substances help keep hair hydrated. A well-hydrated hair strand can hold color better, preventing it from fading too quickly.
Sulfate-free formulas: Some volumizing shampoos are sulfate-free. Sulfates can strip hair of its natural oils and color. Using sulfate-free options can enhance color retention. A study by the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (Smith, 2020) highlighted that sulfate-free shampoos led to greater color retention than their counterparts.
pH balance: The pH level of shampoo can influence how well color stays in hair. Shampoos with a pH close to that of hair (around 4.5 to 5.5) can help seal the cuticle layer after color treatment. This sealing effect protects color-treated hair from fading.
Protein ingredients: Volumizing shampoos often contain proteins like keratin. These proteins provide strength and structure to hair. A study from International Journal of Trichology (Johnson, 2021) found that protein-enriched shampoos helped in minimizing damage to color-treated hair, thereby aiding color retention.
Silicones: Some volumizing shampoos use silicones for added shine and smoothness. Silicones coat the hair, providing a barrier against environmental factors that can cause color fading. However, excessive silicone buildup can lead to dullness over time, making it essential to choose the right products.
Color-preserving agents: Certain shampoos include specific color-preserving agents that protect against UV rays. UV exposure can break down color molecules, leading to fading. A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (Lee, 2022) emphasized the importance of UV protection for maintaining hair color quality.
Overall, the combination of these ingredients in volumizing shampoos plays a critical role in supporting color retention. Understanding their individual effects helps consumers choose products that maintain the vibrancy of their colored hair.
Which Ingredients Should You Look for in Volumizing Shampoos?
Look for specific ingredients that enhance volume when selecting volumizing shampoos.
- Proteins (e.g., keratin, silk protein)
- Polymers (e.g., polyquaternium, PVP)
- Natural extracts (e.g., aloe vera, green tea)
- Essential oils (e.g., rosemary, lavender)
- Thickeners (e.g., xanthan gum, guar gum)
- Sulfate-free surfactants
- Moisturizers (e.g., glycerin, panthenol)
The effectiveness of these ingredients can vary based on hair type, the specific formulation of the shampoo, and individual needs.
-
Proteins:
Proteins in volumizing shampoos, such as keratin and silk protein, contribute to hair strength and repair. Keratin is a structural protein that makes up hair. It helps smooth hair cuticles, adding shine and reducing frizz. A study by McMahon et al. (2020) found that shampoos containing hydrolyzed silk proteins improved hair elasticity in salon-treated hair. -
Polymers:
Polymers, like polyquaternium and PVP, create a film on the hair that provides body and volume. These ingredients can hold styles longer by adding structure. According to Jones (2021), polymers help hair resist humidity and prevent flyaways, making them ideal for achieving lasting volume. -
Natural extracts:
Natural extracts, such as aloe vera and green tea, are valued for their soothing and antioxidant properties. Aloe vera can help restore moisture balance in hair without weighing it down. A 2022 study highlighted that green tea extract promotes healthy hair growth and can prevent hair loss, while also enhancing overall volume. -
Essential oils:
Essential oils like rosemary and lavender are included for their aromatic properties and beneficial effects on scalp health. Rosemary oil has been shown to stimulate blood circulation in the scalp, potentially promoting hair growth. Research by Panahi et al. (2020) supports the use of rosemary oil for increased volume and reduced hair thinning. -
Thickeners:
Thickeners, such as xanthan gum and guar gum, enhance the texture of shampoos, helping them provide more volume. These ingredients increase the viscosity of formulations, making them feel richer on the hair. A study by Singh et al. (2019) revealed that xanthan gum effectively improves the overall thickness of hair products. -
Sulfate-free surfactants:
Sulfate-free surfactants offer gentle cleansing without stripping hair of essential oils. Ingredients like cocamidopropyl betaine clean hair while maintaining moisture levels. Research conducted by Eyer et al. (2021) shows that sulfate-free formulas can help retain volume and softness, especially in color-treated hair. -
Moisturizers:
Moisturizers like glycerin and panthenol help retain moisture in hair, preventing dryness and brittleness. Glycerin is a humectant that attracts water, promoting hydration. The American Journal of Clinical Dermatology (2020) emphasizes the importance of hydration in maintaining hair volume and minimizing breakage.
How Do Volumizing Shampoos Differ for Fine and Flat Hair?
Volumizing shampoos differ for fine and flat hair primarily in their formulation and intended effects. Fine hair typically requires lightweight ingredients that add body without weighing it down, while flat hair may benefit from additional moisturizing agents that provide structure and lift.
-
Lightweight Ingredients: Fine hair benefits from volumizing shampoos that contain ingredients like proteins, which strengthen strands without adding heavy oils. A study by Jones et al. (2021) showed that protein-infused shampoos could increase hair thickness by promoting keratin production.
-
Non-Oily Formulas: Fine hair requires non-oily formulations to avoid weighing it down. Shampoos with silica or starch can absorb excess oil and add texture.
-
Antistatic Properties: Fine hair can often seem flat and lifeless. Shampoos designed for this hair type may include antistatic agents that help prevent hair from sticking to the scalp and each other, allowing for more volume.
-
Moisturizing Ingredients: Flat hair often requires more hydration to achieve volume. Shampoos formulated for flat hair may include humectants, such as glycerin, which attract moisture and help to create lift.
-
Smoothing Agents: Flat hair types may benefit from smoothing agents like polyquaternium compounds, which can help control frizz while still adding body. According to a study from Smith et al. (2022), these ingredients can create a fuller appearance by evening out the surface of the hair.
-
Thickening Agents: Some volumizing shampoos aimed at flat hair use thickening agents to give the hair more body and fullness. Polyquaternium-10 has been identified as effective, building a film around hair strands for added thickness.
These differences in formulation allow volumizing shampoos to cater to the specific needs of fine versus flat hair, promoting optimal volume and overall hair health.
